Lafayette is committed to developing and implementing environmental policies and programs that will enable the City and its residents to meet their present needs without sacrificing the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

Lafayette Accomplishments:
- School District saves money through Green Summit efforts and parent volunteer groups.
- Support a growing group of Lafayette Green Businesses.
- Thursday night Farmers Market.
- Ranked third among small cities for installing the highest total number of solar energy systems in 2009.
- Making the City more bicycle friendly.
- Lafayette Library offers free environmental workshops in conjunction with other organizations such as Wildlife Conservation, the Oakland Zoo, Smart Growth and the Greenbelt Alliance.
- Supports CaliforniaFIRST
- Established an Open Space Committee to address WW monies and other funding sources. A Lafayette Open Space Plan was approved. Worked with the City of Walnut Creek & Muir Heritage Land Trust to purchase acreage on Acalanes Ridge! This property can be seen from 12 cities and adjoins thousands of acres of land already preserved as open space.
- Community center energy audit with PG&E completed. As a result, all interior lighting was switched to the most energy efficient light fixtures and lamps. A 1950's boiler was updated to a highly efficient model saving an average of $267 less per month for an annual savings of $3,204 on PG&E bills.
- Landscaped Community Center with drought tolerant native trees and shrubs that require little water. Also planted Bermuda grass hybrid allowing for less mowing and watering.
- Use low flow toilets, waterless urinals and hand blow dryers in park restrooms.
- Creating a proper dirt bike park to stop destruction of sensitive creek and hillside habitats
- Residential Chicken Ordinance
- Environmental Task Force is working on a Green Building Ordinance. View the "Comments by Mayor Federighi"section in the Council Minutes.
- Began work of green building guidelines and incentives for sustainable building practices
- Formed an Environmental Task Force
- Organized Earth Day events in 2006 and 2007.
- Adopted a mission statement and environmental strategy committing the City to pursue sustainability
- Community Wide Green house Gas Inventory completed.
- Joined ICLEI's Cities for Climate Protection Campaign
